Spangler Candy World: A Sweet Journey Through Time
Since 1906, the Spangler Candy Company has been crafting smiles in Bryan, Ohio. This family-owned confectionery manufacturer has produced iconic treats for over a century, including Dum-Dums®, the world’s most beloved lollipop.
As one of the largest lollipop producers globally and the only major U.S. candy cane manufacturer, Spangler’s product line also features Bit-O-Honey®, Circus Peanuts, Sweethearts®, Necco® Wafers, and Canada® Mints.
Challenge
Spangler Candy sought to transform two recently acquired buildings in Bryan’s historic town square into an experiential destination. Their vision was to relocate their gift shop and visitor center, creating a tourism hub that would boost the local economy and showcase Spangler’s rich history.
Spangler’s Candy World is a unique, experiential facility that combines all of the features of a history center, playland, STEM-based exhibits and edutainment programs, a fully immersive surround sound theatre and working retail store. All of which demonstrate the intricacies of candy production and will appeal to visitors of all ages.
Approach
Designing a Multifaceted Experience
The project began with a comprehensive site visit to understand Spangler’s manufacturing process, brand identity, and available space. A collaborative team of exhibit, graphic, and interactive designers worked together to conceptualize Spangler Candy World.
Multiple floor plans were developed, each offering a unique approach to blending physical and interactive spaces. The design process involved hand sketching and CAD development to bring ideas to life.

Step into Spangler Candy World and immerse yourself in the captivating realm of candy production. The facility’s architecture mirrors the flowing, ribbon-like qualities of sugars and syrups used in the manufacturing process, creating a visually stunning environment.
Dum Dums-shaped history cases
Discover Spangler’s rich history through a vibrant timeline of interactive touchscreens and unique artifacts displayed in Dum-Dums®-shaped cases. Each era comes to life, showcasing the company’s evolution from its humble beginnings in 1906 to becoming a world-class confectionery manufacturer.
Giant color-changing Dum Dums
Engage with cutting-edge exhibits that blend education and entertainment. Giant color-changing Dum-Dums teach the science of additive color.
Dum Dums trolley
Younger guests can hop aboard the Dum-Dums® trolley for an exciting virtual ride through the whimsical Candy World Road Trip game.
Touchless games
Touchless technology games allow visitors of all ages to experience candy cooking, sorting, inspecting, and shipping processes.
Immersive Theatre
Experience the Spangler factory up close in the immersive theater, complete with surround sound and timed candy scents. Get caught up in an exciting adventure featuring the Dum-Dums Drum Man®, the company’s beloved mascot.
The retail shop offers a wide variety of Spangler’s beloved candies, including Dum-Dums®, candy canes, and other sweet treats. This expanded store provides visitors with the opportunity to purchase their favorite candies and merchandise.

Spangler Candy World provides a captivating experience for visitors of all ages. Combining rich historical displays, engaging STEM-based exhibits, and an array of sweets, this attraction transforms the heart of Bryan, Ohio into a candy lover’s paradise.
Result
Spangler Candy World has injected new vitality into Bryan, Ohio, known as the “Candy Cane Capital of the World.” The grand opening weekend doubled Spangler’s annual visitor rate, with the entire community soon celebrating the 100-year anniversary of Dum-Dums®.
This unique attraction has garnered local and national media attention, boosting Bryan’s profile and solidifying Spangler’s role as a cornerstone of the community. Spangler Candy World offers a delightful experience for visitors of all ages, and the sweet nostalgia of America’s favorite candies.
