Project Background
The Goodyear Blimp has been a fixture of college football for decades, covering more than 2,000 sports and entertainment events, from the Rose Bowl to the Cotton Bowl and many games in between. From the launch of the Pilgrim in 1925 to the present time, the blimp has achieved many “firsts” along the way, most recently the first non-player or coach to be inducted into the Chick-Fil-A College Football Hall of Fame.
Challenge
CEI was challenged to use the 600 square foot space to tell the Goodyear Blimp’s history and celebrate its legacy, which has revolutionized the way fans experience the game they love. The experience needed to immerse visitors in an engaging, educational, and entertaining way – resembling what it might be like as one of the pilots, camera operators, or passenger in a blimp’s gondola. Throughout the design and fabrication, every touchpoint required special attention to be physically durable and secure against constant handling and tampering.
Approach
Site visits are imperative for designing a complete user journey. Our team of specialists traveled to the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame to strategically map out the user experience and develop an understanding of each touchpoint, installation, and delivery challenges.
We were able to collaborate closely with each group of key stakeholders and gain valuable insights to visualize the concept as a physical space. Touring Goodyear’s Blimp hangar and archives helped in evaluating the strength of materials and what items to select while developing messaging and identifying media and technology needs.
Solution
The experience highlights the forward progression and continuous momentum, celebrating the Goodyear Blimp’s impact on college football. The journey mimics a blimp’s gondola and features a lifelike pilot’s seat/controls with moving parts and artifacts, including an original broadcast window and video footage highlighting sport’s matchups. As visitors move through the space, they have the opportunity to sense the closest thing to a blimp ride. The interactive exhibit integrates passenger seating for four with touchscreen stations that provide education through interaction with timelines and aerial views of college football’s most iconic stadiums. Visitors are also invited to use a simulated airship camera to explore an augmented environment.
“We’re very lucky to have our brand in your hands. All our guests are impressed and all of us on the Goodyear team are deeply appreciative.”
Ed Markey, Vice President, Corporate Communications at Goodyear Tire & RubberResults
The Goodyear Blimp exhibit gives attendees multiple ways to experience the game in a way only the iconic airship could provide.”Goodyear is honored to showcase this exhibit, which is emblematic of our more driven approach to everything we do,” says Todd Macsuga, Goodyear’s general manager of brand marketing.
